This design is a mix of the US military's M-43, the masterpiece cargo pants M-51, and vintage British Army clothing. The fabric is back satin. It is a very stiff fabric. The material is 100% cotton, just like the M-51.
The successor to the M-51, the M-65, has a change in material to cotton nylon. This may seem like a minor change, but there is actually a big event behind it.
This was the invention of nylon, the world's first synthetic fiber.
Nylon was invented in the United States in 1935, and it was after 1950 that nylon yarn began to be used in various textile products.
In other words, nylon existed in the era of the M-51, which was officially adopted in 1951, but it was still a rare material, and by the time of the M-65, which was adopted in 1965, it had exploded in popularity and a cotton-nylon blend was used. This is an interesting fact for those of us who consider synthetic fibers to be quite commonplace.
